Appointments at Community Vaccine Clinics Halted as VDH Announces Changes to Vaccine Distribution Policy
Arlington, VA: Updated January 23, 2021 – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has announced that going forward, disbursements of COVID-19 vaccines will go to local health districts. Local health districts will then determine how to distribute the limited supply. Hospitals in Virginia will no longer receive vaccines directly from VDH. With no available vaccine supply, Virginia Hospital Center (VHC), has regrettably had to cancel approximately 10,000 future first dose appointments at its community vaccine clinics, including the Walter Reed Community Clinic operated in partnership with Arlington County.
“Virginia Hospital Center is very proud of the quick and efficient effort we put together to lead the vaccine distribution to our community’s front line healthcare workers,” said Adrian Stanton, Vice President, Business Development & Community Relations, VHC. “We were well positioned to lend our expertise and partner with Arlington County to expand vaccine distribution when Northern Virginia moved into Phase 1b. As the State shifts distribution responsibilities to local health departments, VHC stands ready and willing to assist the County with that transition.”
This change does not affect those receiving a second dose. Individuals who have already received a first dose of the vaccine at a VHC-run community vaccine clinic will still receive their second dose as scheduled. As they complete these final vaccination appointments, VHC will have provided more than 16,000 first and second doses of the vaccine to healthcare workers and community members over the age of 75.
Arlington residents who receive cancellation notices from Virginia Hospital Center will be contacted directly by Arlington County to reschedule their appointment as vaccine supply becomes available from VDH. Non-Arlington residents should monitor their local health district websites for updates on vaccine distribution and when additional categories of residents will become eligible.
