Arlington, VA: May 10, 2019 – Virginia Hospital Center (VHC), a community-based hospital providing medical services to the Washington, DC metropolitan area for 75 years, held its annual Friends of Nursing Awards Ceremony last night at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington.

The Friends of Nursing Fundwas established in 1989 with an investment by the local Caruthers Family to award the excellence of Virginia Hospital Center’s nursing staff with opportunities for advancement and to provide scholarships for aspiring nurses. The fund has grown to a nearly $4 million endowment and continues to encourage nurses and future caregivers to pursue their dreams.

This year, the Friends of Nursing Awards celebrated both the 30th Anniversary of the creation of the Friends of Nursing Fund and Virginia Hospital Center attaining Magnet recognition in April. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes health care organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence. Receiving Magnet recognition for the second time is a great achievement for Virginia Hospital Center as this credential is the highest national honor for professional nursing practice.

The Friends of Nursing Awards honors nurses in the areas of professional development, clinical excellence, and leadership. Many of the families who fund the nursing awards and scholarships have a long-time, personal connection with Virginia Hospital Center, its nursing department, or the Arlington community.

Melody Dickerson, Senior Vice President of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer noted the importance of the Friends of Nursing Awards Ceremony: “Excellence in nursing is one of the cornerstones of Virginia Hospital Center and this annual ceremony recognizes both the overall achievements of the department and our skilled and dedicated professional nurses.”
