Arlington, VA: December 4, 2018 – Virginia Hospital Center (VHC), a community-based hospital providing medical services to the Washington, DC metropolitan area for 75 years, announced that it has been named a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, an independent hospital watchdog organization. This marks the third time VHC has been recognized by the Leapfrog Group. Leapfrog named VHC a Top Teaching Hospital in 2016 and a Top Urban Hospital in 2015. The Leapfrog Top Hospital awards are widely accepted as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive.

“We are honored to once again be included among the best of the best hospitals in our nation,” said James B. Cole, President and CEO of Virginia Hospital Center. “Only 118 hospitals in 2018 achieved this honor and Virginia Hospital Center is one of only five hospitals in the Washington, DC metro area to be recognized. As we approach our 75th anniversary of caring for our patients and community, we are once again thankful to be acknowledged for putting our patients first.”

In addition to receiving the Top Teaching Hospital Award, Virginia Hospital Center has also recently received its 13thconsecutive “A” Hospital Safety Grade, also from the Leapfrog Group.

Among thousands of hospitals in the country, Virginia Hospital Center received a Top Teaching Hospital distinction, recognized nationally alongside:

  • 13 Top Children’s Hospitals
  • 35 Top General Hospitals
  • 17 Top Rural Hospitals
  • 53 Top Teaching Hospitals

Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.

“Being acknowledged as a Top Hospital is an incredible feat achieved by less than six percent of eligible hospitals nationwide,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “With this honor, Virginia Hospital Center has established its commitment to safer and higher quality care. Providing this level of care to patients in the Washington DC metro area requires motivation and drive from every team member. I congratulate the board, staff and clinicians, whose efforts made this honor possible.”

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must submit a Leapfrog Hospital Survey and achieve highest performance in its category. The selection of Top Hospitals 2018 is based on surveys from nearly 1,900 hospitals. To see the full list of institutions honored as 2018 Top Hospitals, visit
