Should I Get Weight Loss Surgery?

If you're interested in weight loss surgery, plan to meet with our team for an individual evaluation. Find out if you benefit from bariatric surgery by taking our Health Risk Assessment. You may benefit from bariatric surgery if you meet the following criteria:

Previous Weight Loss Attempts

You have repeatedly tried to lose weight without long-term success through methods such as:

  • Behavior modification programs
  • Exercise
  • Medically supervised dieting
  • Medications

Body Mass Index (BMI)

You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher
  • BMI between 35 and 39.9 and one or more obesity-related health condition, such as diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), sleep apnea or heart disease

Age & Health History


  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Weight less than 400 pounds
  • Have not had a major stomach or esophagus surgery
  • Have not had a severe mental illness

Behavioral Considerations

You'll need to:

  • Commit to lifelong follow-up care
  • Follow a certain diet before and after surgery
  • Have reasonable weight loss expectations
  • Receive any recommended treatments and evaluations needed before surgery
  • Understand the potential risks of surgery

Psychological Evaluation

Your well-being is important to us. If you consider weight-loss surgery, you'll meet with a trained mental health professional who helps you decide if you're mentally and emotionally ready for the experience and changes that surgery brings. Your mental health provider will connect with your doctor to make sure you have the experience that's best for you, and provide any needed information to your insurance provider.
