What Does Self-Care Look like Post-Birth?

Self-care is always important, especially immediately after birth, during postpartum recovery and beyond. Your body takes about six to eight weeks to recover after childbirth. Ever wonder how to care for yourself while caring for others? Here are some helpful ways to tend to your mental and physical well-being.

Rest & Recharge When You Can

Enjoy a nap while your baby sleeps. Even if you have other children to care for or can’t sleep, you’ll benefit from taking time to rest.

Take a break from your busy day. Say no to things that can wait so you can create time to:

  • Go for a walk
  • Meditate
  • Put on a comfy robe and slippers
  • Read a book or listen to a podcast
  • Use an at-home neck, back, or foot massager
  • Visit with an uplifting friend or family in person or by phone
  • Write in a journal

Eat Nutritious Foods

Give your body the fuel moms need. Eating well can help you feel your best. Healthy, nutritious food can be convenient and affordable. Try to:

  • Make freezer or one-pot meals with protein, grains, and vegetables
  • Eat fruit and vegetables daily, whether fresh, canned, dried, or frozen
  • Have healthy snacks on hand like fruit, nuts, vegetables, hummus, or low-fat yogurt
  • Drink more water; try to infuse water with fruit to add flavor
  • Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks

Move Your Body

Exercise after pregnancy helps you relieve stress, sleep better, and improve your overall health. When you feel ready, energize your body with extra daily movement like:

  • Stretching
  • Walking
  • Yoga
  • Dancing

Lift Your Spirits

You are worthy of self-care. Live a joyful life when you:

  • Do deep breathing or centering exercises
  • Find a way to connect with your partner or other loved ones daily
  • Laugh often—watch videos or listen to podcasts that you find funny
  • Treat yourself to something you enjoy, like lunch with a friend or time alone

Ask for Help

People want to help you. Don’t be afraid to ask.

Friends & Family

Your friends and family are happy to be there for you. Tell them specific ways they can help you, such as:

  • Bringing you meals, groceries, or other supplies
  • Completing household chores
  • Spending time with your baby
  • Entertaining older kids or taking them to and from daycare
