The Importance of Breast Health

You know your body best. That’s why your body depends on you to take an active role in your health – especially when it comes to breast self-exams. Early detection of changes in your body can help catch diseases like breast cancer when they’re most treatable.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and affects one in eight women. Breast cancer awareness is more critical than ever.

Each year, experts work to improve the detection, awareness, and screening options to reduce the impact of breast cancer. You can help increase awareness and join the fight against breast cancer by setting the example for preventive breast care.

Reduce the Risk

Be an advocate for yourself and others to make changes that lower the risk of breast cancer, such as:

  • Following your doctor’s recommendations for breast imaging services
  • Limiting alcohol consumption
  • Living a physically active lifestyle
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Massaging your breasts to improve blood circulation
  • Monitoring your breast health with regular self-exams

Breast Self-Exam

Check your breast for signs of breast cancer by using the pads of your three middle fingers to feel your breast tissue by using different levels of pressure. Be sure to follow a pattern and take your time on each breast.

Discuss Changes

See your doctor if you experience any of the following in your breasts:

  • Lumps
  • Pain
  • Shape or size changes
  • Skin or nipple changes, including bloody discharge
  • Thickening or swelling

Check Your Breast Health

Ask your doctor which breast imaging services are right for you. Schedule an appointment online with your primary care provider or call 703.717.7100.
