VHC Health Dedicates Schwartz and Cowley Families Terrace at Outpatient Pavilion
Arlington, VA (December 15, 2025) – VHC Health proudly dedicated the Schwartz and Cowley Families Terrace, a 2,000-square-foot outdoor space at the Outpatient Pavilion. The dedication is in honor of Dr. Raymond L. Schwartz and in recognition of a philanthropic gift from the Cowley family. The space celebrates Dr. Schwartz’s enduring contributions to healthcare and community service.
Dr. Raymond Schwartz, who passed away in 1990, was a pivotal figure in the history of VHC Health (then known as Arlington Hospital). During his tenure as Chief of Medical Services (1946–1956) and Chief of Staff (1956–1962), he championed the creation of critical medical units, including the region’s first coronary care unit and one of the hospital’s earliest intensive care units. His vision helped transform Arlington Hospital into a trusted community institution that continues today as VHC Health.
“My father’s commitment to healthcare and community service remains an inspiration to us all,” said Roberta Cowley, Dr. Schwartz’s daughter. “He helped shape what was then Arlington Hospital into the leading community health system that VHC Health is today.”
