Occupational Therapy

Count on the occupational therapists at VHC Health to provide a rehabilitation experience tailored to your needs.

What is an Occupational Therapist?

An occupational therapist provides therapy to a patient.

Occupational therapists help people do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities, or occupations. They can help you prevent or live better with an injury, illness or disability.

Hand Therapists

Get specialized therapy for your arm and hand at VHC Health. Our occupational therapists have additional training in disorders and injuries of the arm and hand.

Conditions We Treat

Your doctor may recommend occupational therapy if you experience:

  • Arthritis
  • Amputation
  • Congenital conditions
  • Dupuytren’s disease, an abnormal thickening of tissue in your hand
  • Hand fractures
  • Hand injuries, including fractures, burns and crush injuries
  • Ligament injuries and instability
  • Neurological conditions
  • Nerve damage or compression
  • Tendon injuries or disorders
  • Trigger finger
  • Workplace injuries

What to Expect

During your first appointment, your OT will assess your injury and/or symptoms, and ask about your goals. Then he or she will create a care plan to return you to the highest level of participation in home, work and leisure activities.

Services & Treatments

Depending on your needs, your occupational therapy care plan may include:

  • Custom-fabricated splints and orthotics – Support your bones, joints, and/or muscles
  • Custom-made pressure garments – Help you recover from a burn or other tissue injury
  • Ergonomic assessments – Identify ways to reduce your risk of injury at work
  • Iontophoresis – Uses a weak electrical current to help reduce inflammation
  • Joint protection education – Shows you how to prevent pain and injuries
  • Manual therapy – Uses hands-on techniques to reduce pain, increase range of motion, reduce inflammation or relax muscles
  • Neuromuscular electrical stimulation – Uses electric impulses to assist with training or to test the neural and/or muscular function
  • Scar, edema and wound management
  • Sensory reeducation – Helps you recover from nerve damage
  • Taping – Supports your joints, muscles and tendons
  • Therapeutic exercise – Improve your strength, flexibility or range of motion
  • Work simulation and conditioning
