Bone Densitometry (DEXA Scan)

ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence logo

A DEXA scan is a low‑dose X‑ray that measures calcium and other minerals in your bones. It helps your doctor check for weak bones (osteoporosis).

Computed Tomography (CT)

A CT scan takes many X‑ray pictures from different angles and uses a computer to create detailed images of your bones, blood vessels, and organs. Types of CT scans include:

  • CT urography (urinary system)
  • CT enterography (small intestine)
  • Cardiac CT (heart)

X-Ray (Fluoroscopy)

Fluoroscopy shows moving X‑ray images, like a video. It lets doctors watch what is happening inside your body in real time.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRI uses a strong magnet and radio waves (not radiation) to make detailed pictures of organs and tissues. You can receive MRI for the bones, heart, breasts, pelvic floor, and more.

Mammography

A mammogram is an X‑ray of the breast. It helps doctors find breast cancer early, sometimes years before you can feel it.

3D mammography (tomosynthesis) takes many images in seconds to help detect cancer even sooner. It's especially helpful if you have dense breasts.

It has never been easier to schedule your screening mammogram. Screening mammograms can be done without a provider referral. If you’re due for your routine mammogram and have no breast symptoms, you can easily book your appointment online, via MyVHC, or over the phone (703.558.8500) with our radiology schedulers.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound, or sonography, uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of your body. It doesn't use radiation, so it's very safe.

Nuclear Medicine: (PET)/CT & (SPECT)/CT

PET/CT uses small amounts of radioactive material and a special camera to look for early signs of disease. By finding changes in your cells, PET shows problems before other imaging tests can.

SPECT/CT also uses a radioactive substance and creates 3‑D images to show how your organs are working.

Interventional Radiology

Some treatments use imaging to guide small tools inside the body. These procedures include:

  • Angiography (looks at the heart)
  • Cancer treatments (such as removing tumors)
  • Repair of aneurysms (weak blood vessels) with stent grafts
  • Kyphoplasty (treats spinal fractures)
  • Thyroid biopsies
  • Tubal cannulization (helps with fertility)
  • Uterine artery embolization (treats fibroids)
  • Vein care, such as venous sclerotherapy

These treatments are less invasive than surgery. So, you recover more quickly and easily.
