Conditions We Treat

Find treatment for a wide range of gynecologic problems at VHC Health in Arlington and the DC metro. If something doesn’t feel right, we'll listen, answer your questions, and help you feel better.

Fibroids

Fibroids are growths in the uterus. They aren’t cancer. They’re very common and can happen in up to 85% of women.

Symptoms of fibroids may include:

  • Heavy or unusual periods
  • Constipation
  • Feeling full after eating only a little
  • Needing to pee often
  • A bigger belly
  • Pain or pressure in the lower belly

Your doctor can check for fibroids with a pelvic exam and imaging test, like an ultrasound and MRI.

Treatments may include birth control pills, IUDs, or medicine shots. If needed, surgery can remove fibroids to help with pain, bleeding, or getting pregnant later.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Infections

HPV is a virus that can spread through sex. There are different kinds of HPV. Some types can cause genital warts (small bumps on the outside). Other types can change cells and may lead to cervical cancer. The best way to help prevent HPV is to get the vaccine.

Treatment for genital warts may include prescription creams, removal in the office, or surgery using a laser or ultrasound.

A Pap test can help find HPV by showing changes in the cervix. If the changes are serious, your doctor may remove the bad cells with a LEEP or cone biopsy. These are outpatient procedures.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

STDs are infections that spread through sex. They don't always cause symptoms. So, you should get tested before starting a new sexual relationship. We can test you, treat you, and help you understand what to do next. Treatment may include medicine and follow-up visits.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

A UTI is an infection in the bladder. Sometimes, it can spread to the kidneys.

Signs of a UTI may include:

  • Blood in your pee
  • Burning when you pee
  • Feeling like you still need to pee
  • Peeing often
  • Low back pain and fever

Your doctor will ask for a urine sample. The test helps find what’s causing the infection and which antibiotic will work best. Antibiotics often start helping in 24 to 36 hours. Your doctor may also suggest drinking lots of water and taking cranberry pills to help symptoms.

Yeast Infection

A yeast infection is a fungus infection in the vagina, vulva, or both.

Signs of a yeast infection include:

  • Burning or stinging
  • Pain when you pee
  • Itching
  • Thick white discharge

Your doctor can diagnose it with an exam and by looking at the discharge under a microscope.

You can often treat it with over-the-counter medicine like Monistat. If that doesn’t help, call your doctor. You may need a prescription medicine.

Abnormal Bleeding

Abnormal bleeding is different from what you usually notice during your periods. It can happen due to fibroids or polyps (growths), cancer, hormone changes, or other problems. Ask us to find the cause and treat it.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis happens when tissue like the lining of the uterus grows in the wrong place. It can cause pain and may make it harder to get pregnant. Treatment may include pain medicine, hormone medicine, or fertility medicine.

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence means leaking pee. It can happen for different reasons. Some people leak when they laugh, cough, exercise, or feel a strong urge to go. A urogynecologist or pelvic floor therapist can find the cause and help you manage it.

Vaginitis

Vaginitis means the vagina is irritated or swollen. It can happen at any age. It may cause discharge, pain during sex or peeing, burning, or itching. Your doctor will treat it with medicine based on the cause.

Complex Gynecologic Conditions

Some problems are more serious or harder to treat. These complex conditions may need special tests or surgery. Rely on our team to help, explain your choices, and support you each step of the way.
