VHC Health’s Level II Trauma Center is dedicated to providing advanced care for severely injured patients in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Our state-of-the-art trauma center has been proudly designated as a Level II Trauma Center by the Commonwealth of Virginia, filling a critical community need and ensuring that life-saving care is always close to home.

Why VHC Health?

As a Level II Trauma Center, VHC Health is equipped to handle the most severe injuries for patients aged 15 and older, excluding those with extensive burn injuries. Our team of experienced trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, and specially trained nurses is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This round-the-clock readiness ensures that we can provide the highest level of care when it’s needed most.

Meeting Community Needs

First designated in 2021 and redesignated in 2024, our Level II Trauma Center provides immediate, top-tier care, reducing the need for long-distance transfers and improving patient outcomes. VHC Health now sees nearly 1600 trauma patients each year, highlighting the significant demand for trauma services in our community. 

Advanced Facilities and Equipment

A Level II Trauma Center offers the same clinical and support resources as a Level I Trauma Center but is not required to have trauma research or a surgical residency program.

To maintain our Level II status, VHC Health makes substantial investments in advanced medical equipment and facilities:

  • 24-Hour Operating Rooms: Always ready for emergency surgeries, ensuring timely intervention.
  • 24-Hour CT Scans: Providing critical imaging services to accurately diagnose and treat injuries.
  • Redesigned Trauma Bays: Offering ample space and advanced technology to accommodate multiple physicians and their needs during emergencies.
  • Specialized Equipment: Advanced monitoring units, specialized pumps, and operative instrumentation to handle the most complex cases.

    Our dedicated team includes trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, nurses with trauma-specific training, and subspecialists ready to respond quickly to emergencies Our trauma care process is continually refined through ongoing education and training, and research and performance improvement ensuring we stay at the forefront of trauma medicine.

    Community and EMS Collaboration

    The strong collaboration with our Fire/EMS and Police partners from Arlington, Fairfax, Alexandria and the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority ensures that emergency medical services (EMS) can quickly transport patients to our facility, significantly improving response times and outcomes. We work closely with Fire/EMS and the Police department to provide ongoing training and support, ensuring seamless coordination during trauma emergencies.
