Gastrointestinal (GI) Care

Gastroenterology focuses on the digestive system, also called the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and on the liver. These organs help your body break down food and absorb nutrients. At VHC Health, you’ll get care from skilled digestive health specialists in Arlington and the DC metro. Trust them to help find problems early, so you start feeling better.

Your First Visit

When you first see a gastroenterologist (digestive health doctor), you’ll talk about your symptoms and health history. Your doctor may also ask about your diet and any medicines you take. If needed, your doctor will order tests to learn more before planning treatment. You’ll have time to ask questions so you understand your care plan.

  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) – Uses a scope (tube with a camera) and X-rays to look at your liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas
  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), or upper endoscopySlides a tiny camera into your esophagus to take photos of your food pipe, stomach and first part of the small intestine
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy – Slides a tiny camera into your colon to look at just the lower part of it
  • Heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux studies – Help show the severity of your symptoms
