Colorectal Surgery

Three surgeons focus on woman

At VHC Health, you can expect treatment that fits your needs in Arlington and the DC metro. Choose our colorectal surgery team for advanced care that helps you recover as quickly and safely as possible.

Why Choose Us?

You can receive many types of colorectal surgery at VHC Health. Our surgeons use robotic and other less invasive techniques that help you get back to your normal life faster. We do more colorectal surgeries in a less invasive way than many hospitals in the region. So, you'll be in experienced hands.

Experienced Robotic Surgery Team

Robotic colorectal surgery has a lower risk of side effects than traditional, open surgery. But most surgeons across the country don't have training in it. In the United States, fewer than 20% of colorectal surgeries use robotic techniques. VHC Health does 86% of these surgeries robotically to give you the best possible results.

Recognized for Excellence

VHC Health is a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery, according to the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). SRC recognizes hospitals and surgeons that show high levels of safety, quality, and patient satisfaction.

Colorectal Procedures

Trust the fellowship-trained colorectal surgeons at VHC Health for almost any test or treatment you need.

Imaging Tests

  • Screening colonoscopy – Checks the large intestine for polyps (lumps) if you don't have symptoms of colon cancer
  • Diagnostic colonoscopy – Looks inside the colon to find the cause of pain, bleeding or changes in bowel habits
  • Anoscopy – Looks for anal cancer and cells that could turn into cancer

VHC Health is the first hospital in the U.S. to have the newest high resolution anoscopy (HRA). It shows very detailed images in a short time, so you get clear answers sooner.

Colorectal Treatments

  • Anal abscess treatment – Drains a swollen, pus-filled area to ease pain and decrease the risk of anal fistula (unusual opening in the skin)
  • Colectomy – Removes all or part of the colon, or large intestine
  • Hemorrhoidal dearterialization – Cuts off a hemorrhoid’s blood source to shrink it
  • Hemorrhoid removal – Treats a painful, swollen lump near the anus
  • Low anterior resection – Removes the rectum to treat cancer
  • Rectal tumor removal  – Takes out unusual growths without making incisions
  • Rectopexy – Returns a prolapsed (slipped) rectum to its normal position
  • Small bowel resection – Removes part of the small intestine
  • Transanal endoscopic microsurgery – Puts a long tube with a microscope through the anus to remove a rectal tumor

Less Invasive Care

During your visit, our surgeons will decide whether less invasive surgery is right for you. This type of surgery often helps you heal faster, lowers the risk of problems, and reduces scarring.

Our team follows Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) steps, which include:

  • Teaching you and your family what to expect
  • Using pain medicines that match your needs
  • Helping you start moving and eating as soon as it’s safe
  • Giving you clear instructions for home care
  • Scheduling follow-up visits to check your recovery

Count on us for support every step of the way. Call to schedule a consultation and take the first step towards feeling better at VHC Health.
