Surgical Expertise in Gynecologic Care

Our gynecologic oncology surgeons are highly trained in advanced surgical techniques to treat gynecologic cancers, helping patients achieve optimal outcomes.

Depending on your diagnosis, these techniques may include:

Hysterectomy: Removal of the uterus and cervix, with options for total or radical approaches based on the cancer type and stage.
Oophorectomy/Salpingo-Oophorectomy: Removal of ovaries and often fallopian tubes to treat or prevent ovarian cancer.
Lymphadenectomy: Removal of lymph nodes to determine and limit cancer spread.
Debulking Surgery: Reduces tumor mass, especially for advanced ovarian cancer, to improve chemotherapy results.
Cytoreductive Surgery with HIPEC: Combines tumor removal with heated chemotherapy in the abdomen to treat advanced cancers.
Fertility-Sparing Surgery: Options to preserve fertility for early-stage cervical or ovarian cancers.

When appropriate, we also provide minimally invasive procedures such as:

  • Laparoscopy: Uses small incisions and a camera to remove tumors with minimal disruption, often for early-stage cancers.
  • Robotic Surgery: Provides enhanced precision and control, allowing for complex procedures, such as hysterectomies and lymph node removal, with less recovery time.

Non-surgical Therapies

Non-surgical therapies are essential components of comprehensive patient care in the management of gynecologic cancers. Together, these therapies provide vital support alongside surgical options, enhancing overall treatment outcomes.

Chemotherapy and Radiation

  • Chemotherapy involves administering advanced medications designed to inhibit the growth and spread of cancer cells while effectively managing potential side effects.
  • Radiation oncology uses targeted energy beams to destroy cancer cells, utilizing cutting-edge techniques to precisely direct treatment to tumors while sparing healthy surrounding tissue.

Genetic Counseling Services

Our genetic counselors help patients, and their families understand hereditary cancer risks. With genetic and genomic testing, we:

  • Identify personalized treatment options based on genetic factors
  • Monitor long-term cancer risks for patients and their family members
  • Provide informed support to help patients make decisions about treatment, surveillance and family planning

Ask your doctor to refer you for genetic counseling or call Cancer Genetics (703.717.4217) and/or Preconception and Prenatal Genetics (703.558.6077) to schedule your appointment today.
